1st project: Wayfinding the School

Think of an environment that communicates. Our 1st project offers the opportunity to dabble with 'Experiential Graphic Design' (formerly known as Environmental Graphic Design) which involves the combination of graphic design (typography, imagery, color, form, technology and content), architecture, industrial and landscape design. Way-finding systems, signage, exhibit design, retail design, immersive and themed spaces like museum, public and civic landscapes are examples of experiential graphic design.

Depending on class enrollment, students are divided into groups of three. Each group performing as a small agency, each student is responsible for the following area: image branding, wayfinding, and display areas for the School of Arts and Letters at Indiana University Southeast where they have to re-envision the school to illustrate its departments, its excellence and her students' achievements (artwork).

Edward Downs, Kayla Feuquay, and Aireann Smith proposed ideas based on SWOT analysis. They noticed ineffective signs which are small, hand-written, unprofessional and proposed their idea based on color scheme and typographic treatment as endorsed by Indiana University Bloomington.

1st project: Wayfinding the School

Group 3 which consists of Alexandria Montgomery, Shelby Kaiser and Alexis O'Rorke chose the word 'Unity' because the university is made up of a diverse group of people, yet we all come together for similar goals. The students who attend classes in Knob View are united by their interest in creative thinking. They chose to adhere to Indiana University's branding colors, simply opting for the Mint variation in order to give the building more energy and appeal. This helps unify the school along with the font that we chose, Benton Sans. As a building geared towards the arts, whether it be Theater, the Fine Arts, or Languages, they felt that it lacked creativity and personality. In this photo, they chose to embolden the natural structure of the building with the school's crimson red. They also labeled the building to make it easier for oncoming Freshmen and people who are not familiar with the campus to find.

2nd project: Cuteness with a purpose

Why something is deemed beautiful while another functional? On what basis do we decide? As a designer, it behooves us to understand those defining qualities. What are the words associated things that are cute? Babies, Puppies? In this exercise about cuteness, we will explore proportions and characteristics associated with theories by an Austrian zoologist, ethologist, and ornithologist, Dr. Konrad Lorenz who linked cuteness to evolutionary biology by proposing the concept of kinderschema, the set of traits that we identify as cute and adorable.

What is cuteness good for? Psychologists have suggested that cuteness triggers emotional bonding and nurturance in parents. In some instances, manufacturers have used cute mascots to help sell their products and services. Students are required to apply their understanding of Dr. Lorenz's baby schema to create a book jacket for a children's book. They are free to pick a relevant size, think of a title for the book and to design a jacket that covers the front, spine and back of the book which also includes the inside flaps.

Aireann Smith, a major from Bio Science, gets to dabble in making an artwork for the cover which gets photographed and edited in a page layout program.

2nd project: Cuteness with a purpose

Cody Presley's book jacket design.

2nd project: Cuteness with a purpose

Andrew Parker Bolin plays with a strong sense of contrast by picking an elephant and naming it "Big Roy" but the content for the book is small with self-constructed backdrops that are juxtaposed in various angular spaces. He uses lighting and texture from the materials to exude a strong sense of contrast.

3rd project: Say less, sip more.

One of the graphic designer's challenges is persuading an audience to change their attitude, to reflect and possibly to take an action. As a designer in training, students need to stimulate desires and needs through your manipulation of the form and function in type and images in various platforms.

Working with an actual tea brand that is available locally, they apply their design solution for a series of tea (minimum 2, up to 3) for an international market. They have to integrate the English language with another foreign language on the packaging. While the brand is local, the packaging must show elements intended for a market outside of its country of origin. For that matter, they may pick an Asian market for countries such as India, China, Japan or Korea, or for a European market (whose national language is other than English, for e.g.).

Shown here is Paul Robey's solution for a Japanese market.

3rd project: Say less, sip more.

Andrew Parker Bolin adheres to his local roots in Louisville, Kentucky and conducts research to market a local brand by infusing elements that exude a rustic look and feel.

3rd project: Say less, sip more.

Kayla Fuequay creates her artwork by burning them onto which she later painted over.

3rd project: Say less, sip more.

Cody Presley, a printmaking major uses the Japanese fabric dye method called "shibori" to create a packaging that is meant for gifts. Buyers can reuse the fabric and all the materials used are natural so as to encourage sustainability and responsible packaging.
