Design Center is a student-staffed graphic design internship program dedicated to in-house design projects for Indiana University Southeast schools and programs as-well-as regional nonprofits. It is the objective of the Design Center to equip students with real-world experience in dealing with client-focused graphic design. Graphic Design I (S250)

Graphic Design 1 is an introductory course that is primarily concerned with creating and managing visual forms (combined with type) to communicate meaning and values to influence an intended audience across a wide variety of media in informative, systematic, symbolic, intuitive, and sometimes provocative ways. Graphic design is an expansive field. In general, designers persuade their audiences' sensory of visuality, tactility, gustatory and olfactory. The course is about 'experiencing' the broad scope of graphic design through developing appreciations for design as a process, supplemented by lectures, class discussions, readings, and critiques to communicate meaning and values. Through conceptualizing, visualizing, applying and evaluating graphic design as, you will be involved with assignments which require you to take what you have learned and apply it to examine a specific area of interest.Click here for examples of student's work.

Typography I (S351)

the course, S351 Graphic Design 2 (Typography) is about developing the ability to skillfully use typography in graphic design. To do so, fundamental principles relating to typography are explored through a series of progressively complex in-class exercises and assignments, supported by research, readings, ideation, criticism, peer learning, and computer-assisted learning (YouTube and other online tutorials such as Lynda.com). Please be reminded that this is not a software-oriented class as you will be partly responsible for teaching yourselves through learning by doing. This course examines expressive possibilities of typography within the field of graphic design, specifically the application of typography in business communications, promotional and branding purposes. This course will prepare you for design thinking and methods related to typography as tool for visual problem solving via computer and hands-on methods. Click here for student work.

BFA Graphic Design (S452)
- IUS, New Albany, Indiana, USA
This is an advanced and directed graphic design course designed to allow BFA Graphic Design students the opportunity to develop their personal work. Individual goals and directions are established with the intention of preparing the students with portfolio materials. The flexibility to pursue and develop directed artistic and professional portfolios for their intellectual and creative processes are supported by one-on-one and peer critique. Students will proactively manage their own schedule and maintain regular contacts with the professor during the course of study. Due to the advanced nature of the course, a collaborative effort with prospective clients are encouraged to facilitate meaningful and real solutions to design issues. Students have the flexibility to combine studies from their foundation as well as those within the fine arts to achieve the objectives in keeping with specific goals of the assignments. Relevant tools and technologies are not limited to drawing, printmaking, and photography but also time-based and interactive media (film, video, and computer multimedia).More in due time.

Creative Visual Experience and Design

This course is both a reflective and hands-on approach to design which recognizes that there is always an experience created by a product, service, event, environment and people. It seeks to orient students to the full spectrum of human experience through which the different dimensions of our environment affect us through sensorial, retail, technological, style, travel and cultural experiences. Graphic Communication - WKWSCI, NTU, Singapore
Designed and tweaked over the years, the course is designed to respond to students' needs for basic knowledge in applying design elements of communication into creative strategies. This course is an introduction to the necessary elements and principles of design which prepares students through a set of specially designed tutorials and projects which combine to form a methodology in teaching conceptual skills associated with compositional skills necessary to execute a variety of assignments related to promotional communications. Advanced Graphic Communication - WKWSCI, NTU, Singapore
Advanced Graphic Communication requires a pre-requisite of Graphic Communication as students are prepared to refine their creative, critical, communication and technical skills, and solve increasingly complex design problems through the application of skills and knowledge developed through integrated studies. This includes conceptualizing and realizing projects associated with art direction and creative strategies through various visual techniques and compositional skills that use the combination of text and images in a variety of media formats.

The practicum allows students to learn about conceptualizing, designing, writing, illustrating, producing and publishing the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information's newsletter, ConnexSCIons. Besides the technical skills needed in publication production, the course also considers some of the challenges and difficulties in producing organizational promotional materials. This is a Master's level course which combines lectures and interdisciplinary and applied explorations of projects involving visuality and interactivity in today's business world. Positioned for practitioners in one or more industries, particularly those in the field of branding, design, advertising, marketing, media and other strategic designs to understand and develop critical thinking about the forces behind visuality as a communicative practice, each graduate student chooses the direction to pursue relevant to their profession. The assignments are open-ended and committed to exploring ideas that lead to conceptual and practical solutions.

Students are introduced to the multiple uses of the computer as a design tool for the creation of packaging, poster, newsletter, fine art and any other potential publication created from the desktop. Problems involving graphics, typography, and layout will be explored through hands-on experience and lecture. The objective of the course is to acquaint students with the fundamentals of graphic design using industry standard image editing, draw and layout computer programs.
