Unite and punch
Seemingly a simple exercise, this unite and punch ad demonstrated by two students, Lin Wei (left, with black ink) and Lee Qing Qing (with blue ink on the right) allow the foundational students to experiment with the contour of one shape to create new icons/shapes.
Sunburst, Serenity and Strength
With a simple shape of a crescent, students explore how to visually repeat, resize, rotate, and reposition a shape. Lee Qing Qing also explored with using the same shape to interpret "sunburst," "serenity," and "strength." Stacked vertically are Lin Wei's explorations.
Monochromatic and spatial zoning
This exercise is three fold: i) to introduce the graphic-driven technique of abstracting an object which in this case the face of a person, ii)monochromatic coloring experimentation with mixing black and white hues for the right shades, and iii) spatially zoning with dots.
Cute faces
Nurul Huda (on the top) and Lee Qing Qing (at the bottom), through various expressive experimentation showed how they could "animate" their faces and such an exercise is not only fun as they're animating their own faces, the more important task is that they learn how to interpret and imagine.
Embossing and Onomatopoeic words
These are two separate exercises: Embossing/Debossing and Onomatopoeic words. In the former, they learn manual techniques to do so which introduce hands-on techniques and the latter teaches them how to "animate" letters in a visual sort of way.
2D to 3D
Nurul Huda's basic geometrical shapes became "alive" when her structural patterns were put together while Lin Wei's paper structure takes advantage of a simple cut in the accordion fold to tell the story of a happy family.
In order to prepare them for 3D based thinking, this exercise teaches them the importance of linearity, continuation and spatial pattern repetitions.
2D to 3D
More 2D to 3D exercises from Tai Hong Yang from the top who experimented with his characters in Chinese, Charmaine Oon who uses the same template as Lin Wei's (above) and Wai Tong's who introduced graphics both on the inside and outside of the paper structure, giving her story more depth.
Imagination on daily objects
Using simple daily objects, students project their imagination onto them and then they draw what their imaginations are about. Examples from Alvin Leu Wei Chang and Suzy Wui Shu Xian.
Shapes in Names
This is an adaption from the original exercise developed in 2005 for the Design and Color Workshop class at the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University whereby the original exercise is about getting students to notice alphabets in things around them but in this version, they have to spell out their names. This exercise also exposes them to the importance of image making, cropping and compositions.
Kenny Tan did so with both his Chinese and Roman letters.
