Students from Graphic Communication (COM 232) class were assigned a typographic self-portrait exercise where they created their self-portraits using only letters to illustrate their face. Numbers and analphabetic symbols such as parentheses are also allowed in the assignment.

They have to think about their own identity as well as studying their facial characteristics. While they may rotate, resize and flip the characters, they are not allowed to deform the letter forms. Other restrictions include working in black and white only and while they can generate letters or text on the computer, they are also encouraged to cut from magazines or hand-draw the letters.

Bottom: Both Clarence Koh and Kirsty Ewing (an exchange student from the USA) used letters that form their respective names to create their own portraits while Joel Leong resorted to describing his attributes. For example, he writes "Talk is cheap" and places it between his lips. As for the frame on the left, he explains that it adds a quirky fun to the overall composition.

Because only black and white are allowed for the assignment, Priscilla Li spent a lot of time in front of the computer to create the intricate details that define the tonal range of her portrait. Notice the details on the intricate part of her self portrait such as the areas that form her eyes and the lashes.

Book jacket

Students from COM232 in their 3rd and final assignment are required to create a book jacket that includes a front, back covers, spine as well as two flaps. Basing the book on a historical character (dead or alive), they are first to research about the character and although they can use photos or illustrations but they are not allowed to use works readily found from the internet. As the author of the book, they have to think of a title and write the text for the back cover and the flaps. The jacket needs to feature a publisher's contact information, logo as well as bar codes.

Clement Chen's choice of Bruce Lee who made a philosophically famous speech in 1971, "Be formless. Shapeless. Like Water" prompted him to create a book jacket in the shape of the martial artist's face on the cover and his bust shot, also rendered in a fluid form for the back cover.

Book jacket

Koh Ming Xiu's title is quite catchy, "I'm Gianni, I dress sluts!" In addition to the title, every student in the course is encouraged to create their own artwork for their jacket designs.

Book jacket

Joel Leong picks Erlend Oye, a singer/guitarist from Norway. He titles the book "Quiet is the noise" and features a cover with an LP that can be spun around on the cover. Things that can reflect the singers characteristics are meticulously as design elements on the book jacket design.

Book jacket

Aw Qinxin features "Frederic Chopin" and when through her research, she discovers that the musician's heart was preserved in alcohol as a dying wish (which stemmed from a fear of being buried alive), she befittingly creates a jacket that features a heart in a jar.

"Healthy Eating" stamps

Renee Villasenor, an exchange student in journalism from California, USA uses typographic treatment for her stamps by strategically placing incomplete words on a judiciously cropped face and if combined with the fruit held by her teeth, the message to be conveyed becomes complete.

"Healthy Eating" stamps

Sufiyan Sulaiman was inspired by Andy Warhol's expressive styles and decided to create a set of four stamps that while highlight the importance to eat healthily, the visual message is rather suggestive in a lascivious sort of way.

"Healthy Eating" stamps

Using mainly graphics, illustration or images, with "Healthy Eating" as a theme, 38 students from Graphic Communication class at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information designed a set of four mock stamps for the Singapore Post. Switching from the free flowing form of their 1st typographic portrait, they found the diminutive 1.25" x 1.25" size of the stamp a challenge as they not only have to highlight the message by researching what healthy eating is all about but they must also include relevant information such as the value of the stamp and the country of origin. Designing with scale issues in mind, you are free to explore ideas with metaphor and symbols. They are required to create original imagery (with photography, illustration, collage).

Left: Clement Chen toys with the playful idea that even carnivorous animals are now herbivores in his stamp design.
